Original poster by Alex Katz, signed by the artist. This poster was done in collaboration with the Paris Review. Alex Katz was an American artist born in 1927 in Brooklyn, New York. Katz was part of the 10th Street Scene in 50s New York, a school of art that included artists like Lois Dodd, Larry Rivers, and Fairfield Porter. Katz portrayed himself in opposition to the abstract expressionism of the contemporary New York School artists. In his words: "I'm competing with the Abstract Expressionist guys. I'll knock ‘em off the wall. If you put my work next to an aggressive A.E. painting, I'll eat most of ‘em up." Katz's work, though figurative, is highly stylized: the flattening of forms and simplification of the most essential elements are both hallmarks of his art. Today, Katz's pieces are held in collections internationally, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Tate Modern in London, and the National Gallery in Washington, D.C.
