A charming painting of two children, a boy and a girl, riding a green bicycle, their little black pup sitting in the front of the bike.

Annie Tolliver was born in Montgomery, Alabama in 1950, the daughter of acclaimed folk artist Mose Tolliver. Although Annie Tolliver demonstrated an interest in art from a young age—she remembered passing the time as a child by making little clay houses and figures around their Sternfield Alley house—it wasn't until her 30s that Annie Tolliver was finally able to fully invest herself in her art career. Annie Tolliver dropped out of school at age seventeen to be a mother, and between raising three children and working in cleaning houses, hospitals, restaurants, and motels, there was simply no time left to paint. After years of being exposed to her father's art career, however, Annie Tolliver started painting in her father's style and selling the paintings under his name. It wasn't until an art dealer expressed interest in buying Annie Tolliver's work in her own right that Annie Tolliver started taking credit for what she made: "One day someone announced they would buy my paintings if I would put my name on them. With Moses's permission I signed my work. When that happened, I decided to go on my own. At first I tried to paint just as Mose, then I wanted to paint what I like and now that's all I want to do." Indeed, Annie Tolliver succeeded in developing her own painting style, distinct from her father's. Compared to Mose Tolliver's paintings, Annie Tolliver's are more colorful and detailed, full of small touches like tiny teeth and nail polish that make all the difference. Annie Tolliver's work is held in collections at the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Strombecker Corporation in Illinois. She was also included in an exhibit organized by the American Women's Museum in Washington, D.C. that went on to tour the country. Annie Tolliver tragically passed away in 2018 after battling cancer for a decade.
