"Kreutterbuch, 1557. Adam Lonirzer 1528-1586. Adam Lonirzer's Kreutterbuch (Herb Book or Herbal) was published at Frankfurt am Main in 1557. It combines several earlier works and Lonirzer's own contributions. The woodcut themes were plagiarized by artists working for Christian Egenolph (Lonirzer's father-in-law), the publisher of the work. The illustrations are decorative and attractive and often provide authentic insights into the living conditions of medieval times. The Kreutterbuch was a best seller and appeared in numerous, inexpensive editions. It continued in popularity from the mid-eighteenth century until its final appearance in 1783. Because it intermixed useful information, courageous and potentially harmful medicinal remedies, fantastic myths and oral tradition, the Kreutterbcuh was most like our modern almanacs, the kind of entertaining hodge-podge in which there was a little something for everyone."
