A woman with bangs wears a necklace that looks almost like a railroad track. One of Johnson's distinct portraits.

Anderson Johnson was an artist from Virginia known for his deeply religious works of art. At the age of eight Johnson received a message from God that moved him to become a street preacher, a passion he maintained for many years, preaching in towns across America. Illness struck in his 50s, but he was determined not to lose his religious zeal. Johnson went back to Virginia and turned to art, creating the portraits for which he later became known. He spent twenty years turning his home into a “Faith Mission,” covering his walls with these paintings. He would hold Sunday church at his house, thus able to continue his love for preaching. Though the house was destroyed due to urban renewal two years before Johnson’s death in 1998, his lively paintings and murals were saved and today continue the legacy of both the Faith Mission and Anderson Johnson. All paintings sold at the Poster Museum were bought directly from Anderson Johnson’s Faith Mission.
