"'The Pastor's Visit.'--From the painting by RIchard N. Brooke, in the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C."

This engraving in Harper's Weekly was originally an oil on canvas by Richard Brooke. During the radical social change during the American Reconstruction, Brooke became interested in depicting African American life next to a political era where citizenship, voting rights, and other protections under the Constitution were reached. The end result of much of his work showcases every day life of his subjects--just as this one features a scene of a pastor sitting down to dinner--a common occurrence in both black and white rural parishes at the time.
