This print shows two different types of the plant alaternus, also known as Italian buckthorn or Mediterranean buckthorn. Various parts of this plant may be used to treat various medical conditions, including diabetes and various skin conditions.
This hand-colored copper plate engraving is part of a collection of prints from the book Figures of the Most Beautiful Plants Described in the Gardeners Dictionary, published by Philip Miller in London in 1770. There were multiple contributing illustrators, including Georg Ehret.
