"Society of Illustrators Annual Costume Party / Friday Evening, February 1st at the hotel Astor in the Belvedere Ball Room from 9:45 o'clock / The Ultramarine Dance"
A pirate-themed gala where "jolly pirate folk" would gather. The Society, founded in 1901, is one of the oldest non-profits dedicated to the art of illustration. These costume balls were legendary social events where New York's top artists and illustrators would dress in elaborate themes, effectively turning the party itself into a work of art.
