"The New York Botanical Garden Print Series. Herbarius Latinus. Anonymously compiled. Printed at Vicenza, Italy, 1491 by Leonard Achates of Basle and William of Pavia. At least 20 editions of this popular herbal were produced in Germany, Italy, and Flanders. Although the work is based on plants found in Germany, other areas of Europe made use of it by substituting their local species whenever possible. The 150 medicinal plants enumerated in the text were used by medieval physicians to treat anything from falling hair to leprosy. Many of these plants have since been abandoned in medicine as they produced harmful or poisonous effects. The highly stylized illustrations accompanying the text were meant more as a decorative note than as a positive means of identification. The plants reproduced here are Gentian, Hart's Tongue Fern, Dodder, Moneywort, Onion, Bryony, Daffodil, Arum, Water Lily, Mandrake, Peony, and Common Fern. The New York Botanical Garden Print Series comprises poster-size reproductions of the finest botanical garden illustration since the beginning of the printed book. The plates are selected from the rare book collection of the New York Botanical Garden Library, and are especially prepared for this printing."
