Plate 40 includes the following note in the book's annex: "RIO MARIN CANAL, with the Cappello and Gradenigo palaces on the right. Chroniclers tell us that this canal took its name from Marino Dan-dolo who had it excavated. The Gradenigo palace, built last century. is notable for its size and for the carriage-drives in its vast garden. A Bullfight was held in it in 1768."
