This advertisement for Amidon Remy "Gaillon" or "Starch", has stood the test of time as one of the most iconic images of its era. The poster features an unlikely friendship between the French pantomime character Pierrot and a chimney sweep, who were often children as young as 8 or 9 years old. The playful Pierrot holds a box of Amidon Remy starch using it as stage make up on his young friend who appears to be covered in soot from a day of cleaning chimneys. The young chimney sweep is delighted to engage in the activity as his tools hang, dormant, off his back, nearly grazing the stop of a "La Tete De Lion" crate. Before a backdrop of vibrant yellow and royal blue, the young chimney sweep abandons his day of long hard work and instead wears the costume hat of Pierrot - an agent of joy and jubilee.
