Spanish painter, sculptor, and ceramicist Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) is one of the most well-known artists of the 20th-century, and perhaps even of all time. His revolutionary work is so expansive it is often categorized into different time periods such as the Blue Period (1901-1904), the Rose Period (1904-1906), and Synthetic Cubism (1912-1919), amongst others. At the time of his death, there were over 45,000 unsold works in his estate, with painting being his most important and substantial medium. Many critics tout Picasso as one of the greatest artist to ever live, and his art has become some of the most expensive to be auctioned off today. His cultural impact on the art world will never be forgotten, with many museums, galleries, and private exhibitions holding his most significant works.
Description: Picasso completed around 40 different works inspired by the original Le déjeuner sur l’herbe by Manet. This was a period of growth for Picasso, where he focused on redoing past paintings with his new, revolutionary styles. The specific one shown here from 1959 was one of Picasso’s earlier replicas of the original. His Cubist, avant-garde style that so often left the art community at the time scandalized is celebrated in all its vivid color and imagery here.
