Philip Ross Munro Encaustic Dancers Painting

U.S.A., 1991

20 x 16 in (51 x 41 cm)

ID #LOOSEINTHESTORE

This piece by American artist Philip Ross Munro was done using encaustic painting, a technique where colored pigments are added to a hot wax medium and then applied to a surface such as prepared wood. The paint's consistency can be changed by adding resin or oil, but the technique itself is considered to be quite difficult, thus highlighting the skill needed to accomplish such a feat. Munro's use of the wax is evident through the wavy, blurred nature of the image as he creates a sort of dreamy illusion of bodies mid-dance. The piece depicts four choreographers who were commissioned to create a ballet based on the music of Prince.
