Topsy: "Laws! Why that ar's Miss Feely's ribbon, aint it?"

Original vintage poster advertising a stage performance of Uncle Tom's Cabin. This edition of the poster shows Marie looking scandalized by the young slave Topsy's behavior. Uncle Tom's Cabin was the best selling American novel of the 19th Century and was widely credited for helping rally anti-slavery sympathies among Northerners. Not long after the runaway success of the novel, the story was adapted for the stage. "Tom's Shows" were a cultural phenomenon of the late 19th to early 20th Century and were produced all across the country. These performances left an indelible stamp on American culture and ideology, and this poster is a physical reminder of that era of American history.
