Translation: The chevalier de la barre undergoing torture - The Chevalier DE LA BARRE is this young man of eighteen years who was condemned in 1766, by the infamous judges of the Inquisition, to undergo torture, to have his tongue torn out, his fist cut off, his head cut off and his body burned, for having refused to salute a procession. His memory was glorified by Voltaire, and the city of Abbeville, where the torture took place, will erect a Statue to him, in the name of anti-clerical France.
