Original print by Esteban Vicente, an acclaimed Spanish Abstract Expressionist whose work explores color compositions and harmonies. Vicente was born in 1903 Turgano, Spain, but fled his home country in 1936 to escape the Spanish Civil War. Vicente moved his family to New York City, where he soon became a member of the iconic New York School. There he worked alongside fellow Abstract Expressionists like Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline. Vicente's brand of Abstract Expressionism focused on calmer compositions than his peers, arrangements that allowed the pure colors and simple geometries to shine through. Today, Vicente's work is held in collections internationally, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum in Spain, and the San Diego Museum of Art. Although Vicente never returned to Spain after the rise of the Francisco Franco regime, in 1998 the Spanish government opened the Esteban Vicente Museum of Contemporary Art in Segovia in recognition of his contribution to the Abstract Expressionist movement.
