Steve McCurry's famous portrait of Sharbat Gula, titled Afghan Girl, and taken in 1985. At the time of the photograph, Gula was a refugee in Pakistan during the Soviet-Afghan War. This photo appeared on the cover of the June 1985 National Geographic; it was known as the "Third World's Mona Lisa," and CNN called it the "world's most famous photograph."
