"The Lava Beds, Lake Tule, California, the Scene of the Modoc Indian War / From a sketch by our special artist."
The Modoc War is depicted here. The conflict occurred between the Native American Modoc people and the United States Army in northeastern California and southeastern Oregon from 1872 to 1873. Because of the Modoc's knowledge of the lava beds, they had an advantage over the Americans even with fewer people fighting on their side.
The Illustrated London News was the world's first weekly news magazine in 1842 before eventually subsiding publication in 2003.
Year: 1873
