Paris’s Jardin Zoologique opened in 1860 as a botanical and animal exhibition. During the 1870–71 siege of Paris, many animals were eaten. It later became a human zoo, attracting nearly one million visitors between 1877 and 1912. This promotion advertises an exhibition of Sinhalese people from Sri Lanka. The practice continued until 1931, when the venue was transformed into a children’s attraction.
