This illustration depicts both Fort Sumter and Castle Pinckney. Both are famous for being signicant locations in the American Civil War, with Fort Sumter being the site of the first shots and Castle Pinckney as a prisoner-of-war camp and artillery position.
Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper ran from 1855 until 1922 and covered American politics. It was later renamed to be Leslie's Weekly, and is considered to be the first successful pictorial newspaper in the United States.
