Acanthus is also known as Bear's Breeches. The leaves of this plant may help treat intestinal issues and respiratory tract inflammation, among other health conditions; the roots, traditionally used in some African medicine, can be used to treat various urinary and urethral issues. Various parts of the plant may also treat skin conditions or inflammation.

This hand-colored copper plate engraving is part of a collection of prints from the book Figures of the Most Beautiful Plants Described in the Gardeners Dictionary, published by Philip Miller in London in 1770. There were multiple contributing illustrators, including Georg Ehret.
