Philip Ross Munro Encaustic Dancers Painting

U.S.A., 1991

20 x 16 in (51 x 41 cm)

ID #LOOSEINTHESTORE

This piece by American artist Philip Ross Munro was done using encaustic painting, a technique where colored pigments are added to a hot wax medium and then applied to a surface such as prepared wood. The paint's consistency can be changed by adding resin or oil, but the technique itself is considered to be quite difficult, thus highlighting the skill needed to accomplish such a feat. Munro would later state how onerous using wax was, but his efforts were clearly worth the struggle as we are left with beautiful works of art such as the one seen here of blurred humans dancing. The piece was done using the figures of four choreographers who were commissioned to recreate Prince's music as a rock ballet as inspiration.
