"The only man qualified / to be Vice President. / MUSKIE / CITIZENS FOR HUMPHREY-MUSKIE."

Poster promoting Democratic nominee for the 1968 United States presidential election, Edmund Sixtus Muskie. Poster features a black and white headshot photograph of Muskie beneath slogan text. Washington union bug present in bottom right.

Born in Maine, Muskie served as 58th United States Secretary of State under President Jimmy Carter, a United States senator from Maine (1959-1980), the 64th governor of Maine (1955-1959), and a member of the Maine House of Representatives (1946-1951). He is arguably best known for his disastrous 1968 presidential campaign, marred by the publication of a phony letter. Muskie spoke out publicly on a snowy day against the claims made, and during his passionate speech it was reported that he broke down crying. Whether it had been tears or melted snow on his face has been a subject of debate for decades, but regardless of the truth, the incident destroyed his reputation and sunk his campaign. Even so, Muskie left a lasting impact on Maine politics, bringing more Democratic candidates to the forefront after being one of the only prominent Democrats in a Republican-dominated state.
