Walter Blair and Roy A. Hartzell #95 Tommy Cheng Painting

U.S.A, 1995

48 x 16 in (122 x 41 cm)

ID #TC-Z-95

A folded painting: folded shut it shows a portrait of New York Highlander third baseman Roy A. Hartzell, but when opened it becomes a portrait of Highlander catcher Walter Blair instead. A cleverlly inventive construction.

Tommy Cheng is a contemporary outsider and folk artist who lives and paints in Washington Heights. His unique style of portraiture has attracted gallery shows in New York, San Francisco, Washington D.C., Atlanta, and Paris. Cheng's portraits are inspired by pop culture and celebrities. With its wide open eyes, deceivingly expressive faces, and modernly flat construction a Cheng portrait is instantly identifiable.
