A New Year picture (nianhua) is a form of colored print (banhua), used for decoration and the performance of rituals during the Chinese New Year Holiday. Here, two chubby toddlers explore the universe, utilizing binoculars and telescopes. Representative of the Space Age, the children can see satellites, planets, and UFOs.
Part of a propaganda series promoting a socialist spiritual civilization first mentioned by Deng Xiaoping in 1980. This complex was to be based on the Four Basic Principles, which were supposed to act as a brake on the modernization process.
