Its purpose was to encourage the French public to financially support the war effort. The design honors the official entry of the United States into the war and emphasizes the historic alliance between the two nations. Featuring the Statue of Liberty, it symbolized the long-standing connection dating back to the American Revolution and France’s gift of the statue, which remained a powerful emblem for both countries.
