"Der Gart der Gesundheit. Printed at Mainz in 1485 by Peter Schoeffer. This is the first herbal to be printed in a language other than classical Greek or Latin, having been written in a South German dialect. Peter Schoeffer had been associated with the reputed inventor of printing, Johann Gutenberg. A number of the illustrations in Der Gart depart from the usual medieval custom of copying from earlier models, and were drawn from nature for use in the book. Erhard Reuwich is thought to be the artist who did them for Schoeffer. All of the plants were used in medicinal preparation of late medieval times and are as follows: Wasser wegerich or Water Plantain, Gelfyoln or Wallflower, Erdern or Strawberry, Hundestzung or Houndstongue, Boberellen or Winter Cherry, Blumen von arabien or French lavender, Aron or Arum, Betonien or Betny, and Curbiss or Gourd. The New York Botanical Garden Print. Series comprises poster-size reproductions of the finest botanical illustration since the beginning of the printed book. The plates are selected from the rare book collection of the New York Botanical Garden Library, and are especially prepared for this printing."
