The alternate names for this fuzzy plant are cotton roses and cudweeds, because they were fed to cows who couldn't chew on cud anymore. They are part of the sunflower family.

This hand-colored copper plate engraving is part of a collection of prints from the book Figures of the Most Beautiful Plants Described in the Gardeners Dictionary, published by Philip Miller in London in 1770. There were multiple contributing illustrators, including Georg Ehret.
