This poster from c.1940 features a map of the French colonial empire. featuring the nation's territory in Africa, South America, North America, and the middle east. This poster takes a satirical stance on colonialism. Poster reads "Timbuctu, in romance, exotic. Actually a dirty village of 5500 population. mt. Atlas held up the sky for centuries. Roosevelt roared "Perdicaris alive or Raisuli dead", Casablanca, loads of snails. St.Pierre, now rum runners. Devils Island, awful dungeons. Cayenne: no pepper but gold. Algeria: Here Mussolini makes gestures. Madagascar: Here greatest French empire, builders deposed the Malagasy Queen in 1897, now in polygamous exile." This poster may have been created as a response to the murder of the Malagasy Queen of Madagascar.
