This sketch by a special artist accompanying Major-General McDowell's Command of the Battle of Bull Run during the American Civil War was first published in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. The Battle of Bull Run is regarded as the first full-scale battle of the war.

Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper ran from 1855 until 1922 and covered American politics. It was later renamed to be Leslie's Weekly, and is considered to be the first successful pictorial newspaper in the United States.
