Black and white plate from 'Streets and Canals in Venice and in the Islands of the Lagoons'.

Plate 28 includes the following note in the book's annex: "RIO or CANALE DEI CARMINI, took its name from the neighbouring church of S. Maria del Carmine, the bell-tower of which is seen on the right. Near this church the traditional free fight with fists took place annually till 1705, and gave the name of Ponte dei Pugni, or Fisticuff Bridge to one which was there built purposely without parapets."
