Black and white plate from 'Streets and Canals in Venice and in the Islands of the Lagoons'.
Plate 22 includes the following note in the book's annex: "THE ISLAND OF S. FRANCESCO DEL DESERTO, in the Lagune. - These are two views of the very picturesque island where S. Francis of Assisi, on his return from Egypt, built a rude asylum for two paupers. In the XIlI century, after the Saint's death, Giacomo Michiel founded here a church and monastery which he confided to the Friars Minor. In 1549 Clement VII gave these places to the Riformati who still reside on the island which has now become almost a desert."
