"Streets and Canals in Venice 52"

Black and white plate from 'Streets and Canals in Venice and in the Islands of the Lagoons'.

Plate 52 includes the following note in the book's annex: "S. GEORGE'S ISLAND in S. Mark's Basin. - This island has already been described. (See Plate 6. See ales Diate 6). MALAMOCCO. - a large village of fishermen and kitchen-gardeners on the shore of the Lagune, extending from port to which it gives it's name to the farthest limit of the Lido. It appears that when Padunas, in the VIIIth century, fled before the Lombard invasion, they took refuge in the ancient Malamocco, which after being the seat of the doges in the VIII century, was abandoned during the war with pepin and swallowed up by the sea."
