Black and white plate from 'Streets and Canals in Venice and in the Islands of the Lagoons'.

Plate 93 includes the following note in the book's annex: "SANT'ELENA. — This was was one of the most picturesque among the islands that surround the city. Bishop Vitale Michiel founded a hospice here for the poor and for pilgrims in 1170. In 1420 Alessandro Borromeo, a Florentine nobleman, built a Monastery for Carthusians who remained there till 1806. A great Englishwoman,the Empress years since the island was purchased by the Comune to serve as the site for a hospital for Contagious diseases, but this idea was afterwards abandoned and a large iron-foundry was erected in its stead, and completely ruining its artistic aspect."
