"Streets and Canals in Venice 18"
Black and white plate from 'Streets and Canals in Venice and in the Islands of the Lagoons'.
Plate 18 includes the following note in the book's annex: "APSE OF THE CHURCH OF SAINTS MARY AND DONATO in the island of Murano. - This is one of the mostimportant and most highly prized edifices of ancient Venice, saved in part from the vandalism of modern restorers; it was dedicated to the Virgin and is believed to have been first constructed in the VII century; almost entirely rebuilt in the XII century it then took the name of S. Donato from the remains of that saint which Doge Michiel transported thither from Cephalonia. The tessellated pavement bearing the date of 1140 is much admired. This church having been greatly disfigured by superpositions and modifications executed in the XVII and XVIII. centuries its radical restoration was undertaken in 1886, whereby, although its primitive form was in some parts regained, its picturesque character was irreparably destroyed."
