"Streets and Canals in Venice 14"

Black and white plate from 'Streets and Canals in Venice and in the Islands of the Lagoons'.

Plate 14 includes the following note in the book's annex: "S. MARIA MAGGIORE'S RIO or CANALE. - The church and bell-tower of S. Mary the Greater now serving as a magazine for the produce of the Government Tabacco Manufactory, are still to be seen in this locality. The church was built in 1497, and restored, together with the Monastero di Eremite which stood near it, in 1502. It subsequently underwent other restorations, and contained valuable paintings by Giovanni Bellini, Bonifacio, Polidoro, Titian, P. Veronese, J. Bassano, Palma giovine and Padovanino."
