Plate 12 includes the following note in the book's annex: "CALLE LARGA and CAMPIELLO DELLE CHIOVERE at S. Rocco's. - The first belfry belongs to S. Rocco's Church, the other to that of S. Mary of the Frari. We have already said, (Series I, Plate VIII) that the chiovere were grassy spaces in which the pieces of woollen cloth were dried after being dyed; and that the name derives from the chiovi or chiodi (nails) used to stretch them."
